Stretching is a form of exercise that helps in warming up the body before the main course of exercise. The main objective of stretching is to ensure a gentle lengthening of the muscles of the body. Stretching is essential before or after any form of exercising. It also improves the elasticity and flexibility of the tissues. The activity of stretching gradually applies tensile force on the muscles of the body in order to lengthen, strengthen and to lubricate the muscles. The process very often is performed to anticipate physical exertion and also to increase the range of motion within a joint. Stretching is very much important as an accompanying activity to emphasize controlled muscular strength and flexibility for example ballet, acrobatics, martial arts and running. Many a times stretching also actively prevents injury to tendons, ligaments and the muscles by considerably improving the muscular elasticity and reducing the stretch reflex.

How to stretch properly:

For a perfect stretching regime all that is required is to customize the stretching routine so that fit the individual needs. The best way to do this is to stretch until the feeling of a slight pulling but no pain. Static stretches that are a little bit easier are also have good results. It is found that a continuous stretching without rest are better and more effective rather than cyclic stretching. However it should be noted that bouncing or a ballistic stretch might be harmful since the muscles may reflexively contract if they are stretched quickly or immediately following a short relaxation period.

Stretching while watching Television:

Sounds a superb idea. Practically there is no harm in stretching and watching a favorite program in the television. However there are a few things to take care of. The first thing is to change positions of stretching regularly. Very often many of us get lost in the program that we forgot what is being done. However the commercials can help in this regard. They can act as intervals to remind for a change in the position of stretching. Also the position of the television should be adjusted well. The best thing is to set the TV set right directly in front at the mid vision height.
