Acupressure is one of many activities that can be carried out while watching TV. Acupressure is a conventional Chinese medicine technique based on the same idea as that of acupuncture. Acupuncture was first reported in the United States when Nixon went to China in February 1972 to meet Chairman Mao. It is estimated that there were almost ten thousand physicians practicing acupuncture in the United States in 2006. Acupressure involves placing physical pressure by hand, elbow, or with the aid of several devices on different acupuncture points on the surface of a body. It is a 5000 years old form of treatment.
How does it work?
Acupressure is based on the concept of a person’s energy, or life force. This belief system puts forward that a life force known as chi or qi travels through a body along pathways called meridians. According to traditional Chinese medicine, there are 20 meridians. However, in acupressure or acupuncture, 14 meridians are considered. There are 12 regular meridians and two extra meridians known as the Conception Vessel and the Governor Vessel. According to acupressure theory, a block in the flow of chi results in discomfort or disease. To release the blocked energy, an acupressure practitioner presses an acupoint. In traditional Chinese medicine, more than 300 acupoints have been identified, along with 14 meridians. In acupressure, thumbs are mostly used for applying pressure. The degree and duration of an applied pressure varies and the treatment can be performed once or repeatedly. At present, there is no evidence in western medical science to support the theories upon which acupressure is based. However, different studies have been conducted recently to investigate the use of acupressure in the temporary relief of nausea and headache. Some of these studies suggest that applying pressure to certain points causes human brain to release more endorphins, which are small proteins that act as a natural painkiller.
Benefits of acupressure
Acupressure can definitely cure back pain and headaches. Many studies have concluded that acupressure is more effective than physical therapy. Moreover, it reduces many signs of aging. It can also help patients suffering from insomnia. It is very helpful in reducing depression, stress, and physical pain. Acupressure is natural, drug-free, and safe. It does not have any side effects. A trained practitioner can give treatment to his patients, or one can learn the techniques for self-help.
