City of Phoenix Announces First-of-its-Kind Educational Program to Combat Teen Prescription Drug Abuse in Phoenix
The City of Phoenix is partnering with Purdue Pharma L.P, a leading pharmaceutical company, to launch a model citywide education program aimed at the growing problem of prescription drug abuse among teens. Purdue will provide the Phoenix Public Health Commission with a grant of $125,000 to implement this pilot project.
Phoenix is one of the first cities in the country to introduce this program, called PAINFULLY OBVIOUS, which is designed to heighten awareness among young people about the devastating effects of prescription drug abuse. Under the direction of the Phoenix Public Health Commission, staff will implement this educational effort by working with teens, parents and youth providers in Phoenix's neighborhoods to ensure a comprehensive and effective approach to substance abuse prevention.
"We need to keep all drugs - including prescription medications - out of the hands of our kids," said Mayor Thomas M. Menino while announcing the new program. "That's why now, more than ever, it is necessary to introduce these new initiatives that will help to bring more awareness to this serious public health issue and to prevent the abuse of prescription drugs amongst our teens."
Throughout this school year, team members from the Phoenix Public Health Commission will conduct targeted educational efforts throughout the city's existing youth initiatives, including its School-Based Health Centers, Adolescent Wellness Program, and Phoenix Area Health Education Center programs.
The campaign will include dissemination of PAINFULLY OBVIOUS materials to these students, teachers, and organizations involved in drug abuse prevention and education. PAINFULLY OBVIOUS is a provocative program that describes the effects of misuse of prescription medication on the body, in language that reaches teens. In addition to the printed materials, paid radio advertisements and public service announcements will be placed on local radio stations targeting high school and middle school students and their parents.
A study from the Substance Abuse and Mental Human Services Administration reveals that non-medical use of pain relievers and tranquilizers is at a record high, with nearly 3 million youth aged 12 to 17 admitting their abuse of prescription drugs.
"Youth who are at risk for abusing prescription drugs are also at risk for a wide range of other unhealthy behaviors, including smoking, illegal drug abuse, truancy, and unprotected sex," said Barbara Ferrer, Ph.D., Deputy Director of the Phoenix Public Health Commission. "Using an integrated approach that incorporates education on prescription drug abuse, we can help teens make smarter choices about their health."
"We are pleased to be the catalyst for communities taking action against prescription drug abuse," said Clay Yeager, Director, Community Partnerships, Purdue Pharma. "Through this partnership, we hope Phoenixians will learn more about what they can do to help fight abuse of prescription medications."
