The word aerobics literally means “with oxygen”. Body’s aerobic system is heart, lungs, blood vessels, and muscles. Benefits of aerobic exercise are based on how well one’s body can deliver oxygen to his muscles and use it for energy. This activity can easily be carried out while watching TV. One does not need to move away from a place while doing aerobics, so, available time can be efficiently utilized in doing multiple activities.

The credit for aerobics goes to Dr. Kenneth Cooper. He was an exercise physiologist for US Air Force. In 1969, he published a book called “Aerobics”, which was a documentation of what he had discovered through his testing. Aerobics became a popular form of exercise, but many people had doubts about it. People used to feel that aerobics was not a balanced exercise program, as it did not require the use of weights.

Benefits of aerobic exercise

During aerobic activity, a person’s body produces more energy, and delivers more oxygen to his muscles. His heart beats faster and there is an increased blood flow to his muscles and then back to his lungs. A good aerobics exercise program can help a person to live longer and a healthier life. He can get enormous benefits by regular workouts, even if the intensity is low or they are for short period of time. Moreover, aerobic activity is fun, and a person does not need a lot of concentration while doing it. Aerobic workouts make one feel better about him, so he can enjoy life more. It boosts mood, strengthens heart muscles, and help one maintain his weight. It has been found that regular aerobic workouts can even lower a person’s blood sugar levels. It can also help increase his stamina, and help him manage stress in a better way. Moreover, a session of aerobic activity can help him relax after a stressful day at work. It can also improve one’s sexual performance.

If one maintains a regular exercise program, as he gets older, his muscles will stay stronger, and help him avoid fractures and falls. This will obviously keep him independent and on his own for longer. It is observed that people who perform regular physical activity live longer as compared to those who do not.
