Nicotine, which is inhaled during smoking, has a definite effect on arthritis. Arthritis involves inflammation of the joints. The inflammation in joints remains for a longer time. Exposure to nicotine postpones muscle to bone healing. Many surgeons do not carry out some operations on individuals who are affected by arthritis and smoke, as there is a possibility of failure. Nicotine obstructs healing of bone fractures and restrains the bone fusion process. Nicotine is a hindrance to the formation of new blood vessels. The new blood vessels assist all healing and repair procedures in arthritis-affected patients. The increase in blood supply does not effectively take place in case of smokers. The rotator cuff consists of 4 muscles and tendons in the shoulder which facilitate rotation of the joint. The rotator cuff repair surgery may fail in days or weeks due to nicotine. There is a fast joint degeneration in smokers with knee arthritis, than non-smokers.
Nicotine Replacement Therapy
Avoiding nicotine causes irritability, headache and a longing for nicotine. Nicotine increases the amount of certain chemicals in the brain. When people avoid smoking the levels of these chemicals decreases. The bodies react by nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Nicotine replacement therapy assists in decreasing the craving for nicotine by providing the body with nicotine in amounts of one third to one half of what is found in cigarettes. The therapy is safe if used correctly. Nicotine gums, patches, nasal sprays and inhales are available. These products take more time than cigarettes to enter the bloodstream and hence cause less addiction of nicotine than that by cigarettes or other tobacco items.
Fatality
Addiction to nicotine is fatal. It is very difficult to overcome its obsession. So, it is recommended to avoid nicotine at the first instance. In case of smokers who are admitted to the ICU, a common smoking cessation therapy is given to reduce the adverse effects of nicotine withdrawal. However, this step actually increases the possibility of death for such patients. Also if these smokers are given a Nicotine replacement therapy, still the risk of death increases. The nicotine withdrawal symptoms cause a bad effect on the forecast of any disease.
