Bellydance for Fitness

Bellydance is not just an ancient form of dance, it is also a great way to get fit and to lose weight. Bellydance can be done alone or in groups, with a party-type atmosphere adding to the enjoyment of sharing the learning process with friends and family.

Bellydance helps sculpt the body and tone muscles. People who have special concerns with back injuries or cesarean section surgery weakening stomach muscles, bellydance may be just what they need to help build and strengthen those muscles. Of course, a physician should always be consulted before starting any new workout regimen, especially when an injury is involved.

Bellydance does not require special equipment, shoes or clothes, though some opt for fun bellydance skirts, coin belts and finger cymbals. To use bellydance for fitness you simple need a bellydance class or DVD and comfortable exercise clothes that will allow you to move freely and to see your movements clearly enough to ensure you are doing them properly. If you are not in a class with an instructor, having a full-length mirror nearby can be helpful for this reason.

Though some people like to wear shoes, many do not wear them but are barefoot when bellydancing. Some DVDs show instructors in shoes and even in high heels, but high heels are not recommended for those learning how to bellydance or those using it as a form of exercise.

Advanced bellydance students can actually bellydance with trays containing tea services or lit candles on their heads, though neither is required to become proficient at bellydance for fitness.

Many bellydance DVDs break down common bellydance moves into separate steps, allowing the student to feel accomplished with each before moving on to the next and later incorporating them all together into full bellydancing. This form of learning is especially helpful for beginners who may feel a bit intimidated by trying to do a full bellydance from the start.

Bellydance incorporates movements of the hips, abs, back, arms and legs into graceful, powerful and sometimes rapid-fire movements that add up to a fun, well-balanced and great workout.

Bellydance is a great exercise for people of all fitness levels. There are many classes and DVDs on the market that target special needs such as weight loss or various fitness levels so students can pick the right DVD or class for themselves.

People who want to add something new to their routine or who like doing several different types of workouts during the week may find bellydance to be the perfect fit for their workouts. And for best result, add up workout supplements with your daily routine of workouts.
