Although Bhutan trekking offers adventurers some of the most incredible mountain scenery and the opportunity to view remote buildings and temples, it is not something that everyone is interested in. For example, the Snowman Trek is an amazing experience but with 23 days of hiking included with most days involving travelling above 4,000 metres altitude, it is an impossibility for those who have booked relatively short trips to Bhutan. So what can you do if you are eager for some Bhutan trekking but don’t have much time to do it? You can go on Bhutan day treks instead!
Paro Valley
This is where the airport is located so Paro is an obvious location for tourists to book accommodation. The Tiger’s Nest day hike is extremely popular and at only 2 hours and 30 minutes, it is something everyone can enjoy. It involves a nice steep climb to the monastery. Along the way, you will go through a gorgeous pine forest and be greeted by a multitude of Prayer Flags. The Dzongdrakha Lhakhang hike is a short and sweet trip between Paro and the Haa Valley. This is the best option for tourists in a hurry.
Punakha/Wangdi Valley
This region is another popular Bhutan trekking location because of the large number of small, satisfying hikes on offer. The Gangtey Nature Trail takes around 90 minutes and is known as one of Bhutan’s shortest and most amazing nature trails. It is paradise for lovers of nature as you get to see the Phobjkha Valley and take a trip through a pine forest as well as seeing small bamboo plants. If you take the trail in winter, you will get to see the extremely rare Black Neck Cranes.
Bumthang Valley
Yet another Bhutan trekking masterpiece, the Bumthang Valley is seeing a steady rise in popularity. Its Tharpaling Monastery trek involves a drive to Lamigompa before hiking through the chirpine forest and witnessing the entire Chumey Valley. You conclude by entering Chumey Village and being whisked back to your hotel. This is one of the lengthier Bhutan trekking day trips as it takes 5 hours in total. The Pasaling Gompa trek takes 3 hours and involves walking through a beautiful blue pine forest.
This is just a fraction of what is available in terms of Bhutan trekking. None of these treks require a tremendous degree of physical fitness though it is recommended to derive the most enjoyment. Nothing you have ever seen before will prepare you for the beauty of Bhutan’s many forests, valleys and mountains.
If you decide that a proper Bhutan trekking experience is in order, there are 3 day treks into the Himalayas available. Although you will not see everything that the vast Himalayas mountain range has to offer, you will not stray too far from civilisation. One of the things about lengthy hikes such as the Snowman Trek is that you are often many days away from an actual village due to the remote nature of Bhutan. For a holiday that’s like no other, add trekking in Bhutan to your wish list today!
