Get rid of mole

There are six types of moles in USA. Some of them are the Eastern Mole, Hairy-tailed Mole, and Star-nosed Mole. The first one is prevalent in Ohio. Moles are 6-8 inches long and three to six ounces in weight. Each female gives birth to two to six moles in a year. These can be expected in April or May. Their only use is that they consume insects. Every year a 5-ounce mole eats 45-50 lbs of insects. But they cause significant damage to lawns by creating tunnels and burrows, which act as a passageway for other mammals, damage roots and spoil the appearance of the lawn. Moles create tunnels at 18 feet/hour. They can breathe easily under the ground where oxygen is less.

Trapping moles

The best way is by trapping them. The success is more in spring and fall, generally after it rains. During this time moles are most active and pregnant females can also be caught. In summer and winter, moles are present deep inside the soil and hence hard to find. There are three types of mole traps – harpoons, scissor-jaws, choker loops. These should be used in surface holes. They should block the tunnel and when the mole tries to reopen it, it must be trapped. Another trap is the Victor Spear Trap.

Other methods

Usually, moles inhabit lawns in which insects live. If a lawn insecticide is used (eg. Acephate, Talstar) and thus their food destroyed they have to leave the lawn. Expected results are also obtained by the use of Whole control sprays and Mole out granules, which are repellents. The former is used for broad areas while the latter for grossly infected areas. Baits like Mole Patrol and Zinc Phosphide ZP can be used. Another one is called Talpirid. It has the size, shape and feel of a worm. It can kill a mole in 24 hours. Gassers like Giant Destroyers are also effective. Detect main runway and clear an opening for insertion of cartridge. Seal other openings and place fuse in the cartridge. Light the fuse and introduce the cartridge in the runway. When the cartridge begins to emit gas cover the opening with dirt. Never use such gassers inside buildings.
