Google+, Is It Really All That Different From Facebook?

I remember when the buzz about Google+ was all over the news.  There were a select few who had invites to join before the general public who were like an elite group.  My envy grew like wildfire, I needed to have access to Google+ and stay abreast of ALL new developments in social media. I wanted to be the one generously doling out Google+ invitations! I didn’t want to learn about Hangouts from my mother!  I needed to find someone with this golden ticket.

One day I decided to search Google for any open invites and boo-yah! A writer from a random tech magazine was graciously extending invites out to a limited number of readers-and I was one of them! I did a quick celebratory dance in my head and then got busy creating my profile. So, I had my shiny, new profile up but what now? I didn’t have anything clever to say and didn’t quite know what to do. I was starting to get mad at myself for being a G+ groupie and cheating on Facebook. I decided that G+ and I needed some time apart so I can learn more about my new liaison. I learned some things which helped repair our relationship and understand G+ better. Let me highlight the main differences between Facebook and Google+.

To this day, Google+ is still in beta so things will likely keep changing and improving-depending on how you look at it.

G+ has Hangouts which are group video chats so you can chat with new and old friends via Skype. Another feature which FB is now on to, are Circles. The purpose of Circles is to separate your G+ contacts into categories and control what each Circle can view. Did you ditch your aunt’s candle party to go to see Breaking Dawn and you posted a review on G+? No worries, limit your status updates to Friends only and Aunt Betty will be none the wiser. You can also choose what you want to see on your stream so if you’re not in the mood to read posts from specific circles, you choose what you want to see.

FB has its own unique features and is keeping up with developments from G+; so, which side are you on? Will FB remain social media king or will G+ take the throne?
