North Korea reeling under the recent drought suffered a great damage to its agriculture. Due to the damage to agriculture, the country faced food insecurity for millions of the population. The loss of crops and lack of rain brought in new threat of food scarcity and malnutrition in children. What made the drought worse is that it jeopardized the re-plantation of its main staple, rice, making the food shortage most horrible. The drought that started in the early months of the year continued on to the next month. Expert review and studies are needed to avoid such situations in the future.

What Caused The Rain Scarcity And Drought?

Many blame the deforestation happening over the decades coupled with soil erosion. Many are also of the opinion that the mismanagement from the government is also to be blamed. There has been many reforms happening in North Korea for a while and it is assumed that none of it pulled off a real change. The farmers were allowed to hold the 60% shares of their produce and have also got an increase in their incentives. But none of it was visible evidently. Even then nothing can pin point where to all went wrong to have this situation.

The only thing evident is the decline in the harvesting yields. It had almost come to be stalled with the lack of rain. Many believe it is the way of nature’s response to cutting down the trees to have more commercial spaces and less of the fields. No trees means no rain, without rain there is no agriculture that can survive.

Weather Changes To Be Blamed?

The frequent weather changes make it difficult to have normal crop growing by the agriculture industry. The unpredicted deficit or excess of the rain are both damaging to the crops. It is also said to be doubtful as to how much North Korea was able to capitalize the normal and extended rainy season 2 years back. It is also said that whatever success they achieved in agriculture are only due to the normal or excess rain being received and that has hardly anything to do with the reform plans. The reforms and policies did pay off but only in remote areas and it is yet to be successful in a broader platform.

It is unusual for North Korea to openly come out about the drought so the situation has to have been so bad. It raises many questions as if there is severe drought and there are food shortages, what really happened to those increase in harvest?

There have been aids from the neighboring South Korea and also from UN, but nothing seemed to have helped for the magnitude of the problem at hand. With the facts that 1/3 of children are under malnutrition, along with almost 20% of the expectant mothers, the future of the future generation in North Korea is hanging in the balance.
