If you can't stand the heat stay out of the kitchen

It is a hot, humid and extremely busy environment, and if you are unable to withstand the pressures and difficulties of such a working environment, then you probably shouldn’t be in that line of work.

With so many stoves and ovens on almost all the times, the kitchen can get pretty hot, which is why those working in commercial kitchens are given uniforms made of breathable fabrics which allow for airflow so that they can be comfortable and stay cool. Kitchen shirts and coats are made of breathable cotton, and are very light weight, in order to provide for maximum movement while still keeping the wearer cool. Another trick is to wear a good chef hat to keep your head cool, and prevent any sweat or hair from falling into the food.

In addition to uniforms, here are a few other tricks you can use to stay cool in a hot kitchen:

  • Effective air conditioning – Having a good ventilation and air conditioning system is vital for a hot kitchen, especially during the summer months when it can get pretty hot. This keeps your staff cool and comfortable, and less tired on busy days.

  • Walk in refrigerators and freezers – Many commercial kitchens are equipped with walk-in refrigerators and freezers, which is the ideal thing to get a quick cooling off now and then. Just remember not to get locked inside it!

  • Exhaust fans – These types of fans are able to remove the steam and heat that accumulates in a kitchen, and keep the environment at a comfortable level.

  • Keep hydrated – When the kitchen gets busy and you are loaded with work, you may forget about drinking sufficient water to keep your body hydrated, but this is one of the best ways to keep your body cool.

  • Cool food and beverages – Having a cool snack or drink from time to time is another great way to cool down your body and stay comfortable when the heat is on.
