Within one week of its announcement, the Amazon Kindle Fire is on the fast track for pre-orders. The new tablet will hit retail shelves on Nov. 15—just in time for holiday shopping but it doesn’t mean you can’t order one now.
Amazon announced the Fire on September 28 with a retail price of $199.99. The company began taking pre-order sales on the same day.
On its first day, an estimated 95,000 preorders stormed in for the Kindle Fire according to the market research firm, eDataSource. The second day? The number hit 20,000 and after daily sales, the numbers have already hit 215,000.
There are higher figures being cited on a blog covering Google’s Android platform. Cult of Android said Monday that the Kindle Fire was selling (on average) at a number of about 50,000 per day as of Monday afternoon, citing a source within Amazon.
How does this compare to Apple’s iPad? The company sold 300,000 units on its first sale day.
These are only estimated numbers and as corporate practice, Amazon does not release official sales numbers. Annual sales for the Fire’s predecessor, the Kindle’s three-year sales estimates are 8 million as of 2010 figures.
In addition to the Kindle Fire’s price, it also needs to be functional, attractive and durable.
The Cult of Android blog recently wrote about the numbers and said they could make the Fire’s launch the largest tablet in history, surpassing both iPads in the first month of sales.
This could be a competitive ploy by Android to stir the pot but regardless, the numbers won’t lie and it’s an interesting horse in the tablet race. The two tablets offer different features and regardless of the very attractive price; the iPad may appeal to an even broader audience but Amazon has a loyal following.
