Mowing the lawn

Apt mowing is the basis to have a healthy lawn. Absence of mowing causes a lawn to look like a prairie. The height and frequency of mowing decide how attractive the lawn looks. A high quality is obtained with cylinder mowers with many blades. The blades must be sharpened for good quality. The dew must be brushed before mowing. Rotary and hover mowers are generally used for decorative lawns. Scalping occurs on soft lawns (as wheels sink), after fast laps or if the cut height is too low. If cutting blades are blunt or setting of mowers is wrong, Tearing may occur. Ribbing takes place if grass is too long or cylinder mowers are used too fast (decimating the number of cuts). When cutting height is too high on cylinder mowers it is not possible to gather the grass and a ragged cut takes place. A closely mown lawn requires a continuous watering schedule.
Mowing Height and Frequency
There is a rule which states that for a prosperous lawn mow at the most one-third of the grass blade in one lap of mowing. For different grass types the prescribed mowing height varies from 1 to 3 inches. For fine lawns a cut of 6-13 mm is suggested while or ornamental lawns it is 13-25 mm. During hot weather or drought choose the upper end of the range and the lower end during cooler weather. After mowing, use edger’s or trimmers that provide a nice clean edge. Now collect the clippings left over by these operations. These clippings are plentiful of organic matter and if used reduce the amount of fertilizer to be purchased. In summer mow two times weekly and once in a week in spring and autumn.
Precautions
Avoid getting injured while mowing. Don’t pull a walking mower. Wear tight clothing. Earplugs should be used to reduce noise pollution due to trimmers, edger’s and blowers. Keep children away while you are mowing. Before adding fuel it should be ensured that the mower is stopped and engine is cool. Keep power off when there is a non-grass area. On slopes don’t mow up and down but along the slope. Take care not to bang a mower on a tree by keeping a grassless zone around the tree.
