Music therapy involves the use of music to enhance healing and the quality of life. It is a complementary therapy, which implies that it is used in conjunction with other treatments to help the patients handle the mental and physical state with the diagnosis. The therapy comprises of listening to music, creating music, singing, discussing music and guided imagery with music. The main aims of music are to relieve stress, apprehension and fear, improve mood, decrease the heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate, relieve depression and sleeplessness and decrease muscle tension and give relaxation. Music therapy is extremely useful in infertility problems as it generates a very peaceful atmosphere, which is very conducive for conception and pregnancy.

Nature of music therapy

Music therapists believe that rhythm is beneficial. The muscles of the body, including the heart muscle, harmonize to the beat of music. Some types of classical music matches the rhythm of the resting heart, which is 70 beats per minute. When the heart is beating too fast, this music can slow down the heart. Self-expression in music therapy can show up subconscious thoughts and feelings and be healing in a similar way as psychotherapy has exhibited itself to be therapeutic. The creative process of creating art through music, painting, sculpture or dance can be beneficial.
Music therapy can be slot in many different types of environments. People hear music alone or in groups. Sometimes there may be trained therapists or there may not be. The atmosphere may be very simple as listening to a CD. Specially selected music can be transmitted into hospital rooms. Music therapists design the therapy for a large variety of needs. The different ways in which music is used is music improvisation, receptive music listening, song writing, lyric discussion, imagery and relaxation and performance of music.

Music therapy session

A music therapy session is specially designed to promote self-expression. The therapist creates a musical and emotional environment that inspires the listener to respond by exposing personal experiences or feelings. In addition to music, speech and drama may also be included. All the negative feeling, which would act as an impediment for conception are removed and the mind remains very peaceful for the possible pregnancy.
