Imagine a fountain that plays music and has multiple colors of water sprayed designs? Sounds very much enchanting, is it not? An animated fountain that creates awesome and mesmerising three-dimensional in water spray patterns along with background music is known as musical fountain. The sound waves and laser against water particles produce the musical fountain effect. The water streams are activated in strategic timed durations refracts and reflects the light to create the three-dimensional effect.

The idea of this fountain was first conceived by a German -Otto Przystawic in 1930. He created a fountain that was graceful- the array of water nozzles created water sprays that not only rose but also swayed from side to side or revolved in circle . This resembled the ballet dancers. The lighting gave colors to the water and make water sparkle. Though the musical fountains appear to respond to music, they are programmed before hand. In the early days, the music was played manually live. However, today it is automated using software programmes.

Musical Fountain – Installed Where?

The musical fountain can be installed in different venues including public gardens, shopping centre, and theme parks and on pools and ponds. Some of the places where musical fountains are installed are

1. Self contained pool where the water can be treated. This is because the water and the fountain mechanism can be kept in clean and pristine condition.

2. Used in large bodies of water like lakes as floating musical fountains. The advantage is the ability to rise and fall with the natural variation of water depths. However, the maintenance of the fountain is expensive.

An example of the musical fountain is one in Sentosa, an island off mainland Singapore.
