In the language of chemistry steroids can be defined as a terpenoid lipid that can be characterized by the skeleton of four fused rings forming the structure. There are different kinds of steroids and each one of them varies in their functional groups attached to those rings. Distinctively hundreds of steroids are also traced and classified in plants, animals and fungi. Generally most of the steroids are derived either from sterol lanosterol or the sterol cycoloartenol. Of these two groups the former is a derivation from the different animal and fungi sources and the later is derived from the various plant sources.

Darker side of the steroid drugs:

The potential effect of corticosteroids can result in serious side effects that resemble a malfunction of the adrenal glands causing it to overproduce cortisol. The list of other possible side effects of the corticosteroids administered during arthritis is long and mainly includes risks of acquiring high blood pressure, diabetes, swelling and edema, cataracts, acne, muscle weakness, stomach ulcers and many more. Mostly when used for a short-term treatment, the steroid drugs are usually prescribed at a very moderate dose and reduced or tapered over a one two period weeks. The main purpose of this is to achieve a sudden improvement in the symptoms. The administration of a long-term therapy is usually reserved for severe cases rheumatoid arthritis and other related diseases. The higher dosages of steroids are given occasionally for the most rare and the most severe cases of the inflammatory disease.

Disadvantages of steroids drugs for arthritis:

Arthritis is a leading cause of disability within the United States of America. The most common form of arthritis Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that affects both the white and the African Americans equally. The treatment of osteoarthritis with steroids can be risky, as the tests have proved that steroids seem to provoke hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. Hence it is always better to avoid steroids especially in the cases of arthritis treatment. Other than this significant factor many arthritis patients who are suffering from diabetes at the same time may face several renal effects as well as gastrointestinal bleeding upon the administration of steroids.
