Peanutbutter on the Couch

Oh no! He promised he would eat that peanut butter sandwich sitting at the table, but you know sometimes promises get forgotten in the excitement of the moment. The front doorbell rang and the UPS man put the package down on the floor next to the living room entrance and Jimmy just had to have a better look, sandwich in hand. The UPS man didn't notice Jimmy behind him, and before you could say "Jimmy take your sandwich back to the table," there he was sprawled on the floor and there was his sandwich, smeared over your new damask sofa -- another unintended disaster that needs a quick cleanup.

When your upholstery has been attacked by food, whether smeared on by a toddler or spilled by an adult, the best defense is having the appropriate clean up materials ready at hand. You'll need clean rags or paper toweling to mop up the mess and not let it spread any further. A clean sponge is also useful to absorb spills or gently lift off sticky stuff like jam. Your toolkit should contain a gentle scraper that you can use to carefully scrape off any solids from the surface of the furniture. A stiff business card or playing card from an old deck works well because you can bend it to whatever size and angle you happen to need.

If your sofa is made of leather, and the offending substance is oily, like peanut butter, wash the area of the stain with warm sudsy water. Rinse off the soap residue by going over the same area with a clean damp sponge and wipe the leather dry. Then follow this treatment with a leather cleaner or saddle soap to restore the leather to its former glory.

If your sofa is made of fabric and you happen to see the spill happen, you may be able to prevent a permanent food stain -- and more importantly an unpleasant odor -- by moving quickly. If you can get the offending substance off the surface of the couch before it has soaked through to the underlying padding, you will be in relatively good shape. Use a clean terry towel or paper toweling to wick up any liquid.

The real problem arises if milk or something else that can sour or become rancid finds its way deep into the furniture. In that event, we recommend you use the services of a professional upholstery cleaning service to penetrate cleaning materials deep down to where the food has reached. The professionals will take into account the kind of food that caused the problem, the material that covers the furniture, and the kind of material used for padding in order to choose the right chemical to treat the stain and any odor caused by the food spill.

With a cache of the right cleaning materials in a handy place for quick action, you may be able to take care of the simple spills. And for more devastating cases, you'll know who to call.
