Raking the seed areas
January 1, 0000
1284
The process of raking is also called as detaching. A thatch is the icky brown stuff that builds up from the dead crowns and the stems of the grass plants. The upper portion of the grass always remains greener but with a careful look at the base of the plants one can get to know about the fact and see that the this part is brown and dry looking. Generally some of the thatch is actually helpful since it protects the crown of the grass plant and acts as mulch that helps the soil to retain appropriate levels of moisture and water within. More than this it also acts as a cushion thus preventing soil compaction. However there are some negative sides to the thatches that can have a heavy impact upon the growth of the lawns.
When to be done:
When the thatches tend to overgrow than their normal levels it can really create problems by blocking water and air from the soil and also by harboring insects and disease pathogens. Then is the perfect time to take the action. The only thing that needs to be done is de thatching or raking. The best time to do raking is during the autumn or the falls since it that time when the grass tends to grow more than ¼ to ½ inches thick. For raking small areas one can use a hand cultivator or a ground rake in order to rake out the thatch. In case of raking a comparatively larger area it would be a wise step to invest in a de thatcher attachment to the mower. This option will not only save a lot of time but also the efforts required.
Steps involved in raking:
Simply following some of the simple steps that include proper aeration, top dressing of the soil within a fixed time period, proper selection of the grass variety and proper fertilization can possibly prevent Thatch buildup. The first step is of prior importance since it is related with raking and is the most effective natural method of natural prevention of thatches. Appropriate and proper aeration has the potential to diminish the thatches completely. Moreover it also helps in the alleviation of the soil compaction.
