Suppose the lawn has bare areas, a brown patch or is getting thin it is time to reseed. It is the most easy and economical way to renovate the lawn. Reseeding can be done at any time during the year. However, it should be avoided before winter months, as there is not the required time for the grass to take hold. Ideally, the time is late in summer or at the beginning of fall. Fall reseeding is better as warm soils promote fast germination, hindrance from summer weeds is less and the seedlings get some time to strengthen before facing summer’s heat. If done in summer extra pains have to be taken to keep the nascent grass moist all the time.

Procedure

The first step is to get rid of all weeds, dead grass and rubbish material on the lawn. The soil must be prepared by loosening it upto atleast three inches with a rake. Sprinkle fertilizers or rich manure upto a height of 2 inches and mix it with the soil. Apply water on the top and then distribute the seeds. Take precaution that the seeds are mixed into the soil or covered, so that birds do not reach them. If the area faces a gross problem of birds envelop the seeds with mulch or straw about quarter of an inch thick. Now tap the soil. Use a lawn roller to make a uniform level. It can be rented from a garden supply stores. While reseeding a small patch, sprinkling of seeds can be done by hand. But for a large area use a mechanical spreader for uniform distribution of seeds. When new grass sprouts up, apply a starter fertilizer.

Seed Selection

Select a seed similar to the existing grass enabling a uniformly colored lawn. Also take into consideration cool-season and warm-season grasses and those with shade or famine tolerance. 1000 square feet need 3 to 4 pounds of seed. Refrain from using bargain seed. Grass usually shoots up in 2 to 3 weeks. The optimum length for lawns is approximately two to two and a half inches. Advantage of reseeding is that similar result as achieved by exorbitant and rigorous methods like installation of sods, setting sprigs or planting grass plugs can be achieved.
