Heart disease is a serious issues and some of the risk factors can be controlled. There are however some risk factors that are completely out of ones control.  Heart disease is responsible for a reported 1.3 million heart attacks a year.  Learning what you can to limit your risk of getting hart disease is a great way to help prevent a heart attack from occurring.

Risk Factors that One Cannot control

Some people will be at risk than others. This is due to a variety of factors that include the aging process, having a family  history of heart disease, being of the male sex, being post- menopausal and certain races are more prone to heart disease as well. African Americans, American Indians and Mexican Americans are more prone to having heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases than Caucasians.  If you fall into any of these categories the best that you can do is take optimal care of yourself and live as healthy as possible. Avoid the risk factors that can be controlled, eat right and stay fit.

Risk Factors that can be Controlled

Making changes in your lifestyles can help to prevent heart attacks and other serious medical conditions from occurring. If you start  making these changes right away the chances of you having a heart attack will begin to decrease.  The following is a list of well known risk factors that are directly related to having a heart attack.

-  Smoking- There is  no secret that smoking is  bad for one's health.  Smoking not only affects the lungs it also has a serious negative impact on the heart. Quitting smoking today can allow you to live longer. Medical experts state that each cigarette one smokes is equivalent to losing 6 minutes of your life.

-  Uncontrolled Diabetes- Diabetes is a very manageable disease and when it is manager properly many may not even know they have it. However, when the disease is left to run rampant serious consequences can occur including putting yourself at risk for a heart attack.

-  Obesity- Being overweight means that your heart has to work harder. The harder your heart has to work the more chance it has of breaking down and causing a heart attack or other serious medical issues.

-  Stress Levels

- Physical inactivity

-  High Blood Pressure

- High Cholesterol

All of these will add more strain to your heart and increase your risk of developing a heart attack later in life.
