A proper toddler bed is necessary when the baby has grown too big for a cot. The purpose of a toddler bed is to take baby through the time starting from when they are too big for a cot yet too small for a regular bed. The ideal time to move the baby out of their cot and into a toddler bed is as soon as the distance measured from the top of the cot mattress in its lowest position and their highest position is less than 75% of the baby's height. Typically this is when they are aged between 18 and 40 months approximately. Toddler typically spending 10 and 13 hours per day sleeping it is essential to ensure that their bed is safe and secure.

Steps for safe bed
Always choose a bed that is low to the ground in order to minimize the risk of injury if toddler falls. Adjustable guardrails are available, which fit between the bed base and mattress to prevent falls by converting a bed into a form of cot with low sides. Choose the location of toddler's bed with care. Keep away from edges of temperature such as windows, doors or radiators and strangling hazards like blind cords. Make sure those toddlers are not trapped between the side of the bed and the wall. Make sure the bed is strong and all screws and joints are secure, especially if it is assembled at home. Place something soft around the bed like a spare quilt or soft rug to reduce the shock of the fall and help prevent injury if toddlers fall out of bed. Modern mattresses should all be fire retardant but always check and choose natural fibres like cotton and wool for bedding as this absorbs heat and perspiration better. If toddler's bedding has been washed in strongly scented washing powder or fabric conditioner, make sure it is been well rinsed. Chemical residues and strong perfumes can worsen asthma and produce allergic reactions in some children. It is desirable to leave windows open at times for ventilation but make certain that cats and similar pets cannot enter the room and get access to the bed.
