Stress and How to Cope with It

Everyday, we are faced with different stressors, from the daily chores at home, to the different deadlines in school, and numerous reports at work and clients to deal with day by day.   For most individuals, everyday may be a unique experience. For some, it may be becoming too routine and therefore monotonous and lifeless sometimes. Whether we admit it or not, it may cause us to be unhappy and wanting to get out of the world we chose to be in.

Stress is an event in our life that is not surprising or unusual.  Sometimes, we ignore it.  But in time, we may notice it is evident in our face, in our appearance, and even in our outlook in life. Physically, it may make us susceptible to illnesses bringing our immune system down.  And emotionally, it may wind us up and bring our forbearance to test. Many times, even smiling could already take some effort for such a strained individual who may be lost in thought because of the demands one is faced with.  In other words, stress could unconsciously change our character, if we are not that healthy and resilient enough to cope with it.

Different people with different personalities would share various techniques on coping with daily tension.  Some may firmly say that it is a decision to be happy and to be not so much affected with whatever challenges we are confronted with.  But human as we are, sometimes, it cannot be held that we get sick and tired and run out of strategies.

No matter how difficult things may be at times, the coping up is usually begun when one learns to accept.  Acceptance of whatever there needs to be embraced at the moment.  Sometimes there are really things which cannot be changed and we simply have to accept and just live by it.   However, in circumstances like this, giving one’s self a break may be considered as one of the most invaluable rewards.  This break could come in different forms, simple or grand, such as having a cup of coffee, chatting with friends, buying yourself your favorite accessory or treating yourself with your most-craved dessert or going out for a holiday.  Indirectly or directly, making yourself loved and cared by you, boosts up your morale and gives you a different kind of energy. Self-awareness and self-importance would indeed be a first-base stress-management strategy.

Finally, try to take control of your environment, rather than letting your environment control you. Have that sense of conviction that you can manage it.  And if at times you feel you are about to give in, it is best to squeeze out your feelings rather than loading them up inside. It would not be of help if you keep silent and let the world believe you are perfectly fine. Let it out yet don’t forget to smile.  Try to do it a habit and you will definitely feel your heart lighten up.
