What is an External Hard Drive

These days, there are many types of files that we want to save, photographs, music and movies to name a few. The best way to store these types of files are to save them to a disk. There are many types of disks available. There are floppy disks, cd’s, dvd’s and external hard disk drives.

Floppy disks served their purpose when file sizes were small enough or when they could be zipped. However, today, file sizes have increased dramatically, making floppy disks obsolete. CD’s and DVD’s are good for saving data as well. However, if they get scratched up or fail for some unknown reason, they are no good and they information on them cannot be recovered. I have found that the most reliable way to store large files is an external hard disk drive.

An external hard disk drive is an actual computer hard drive, enclosed in a hard case that is very easy to carry around with you. They are durable and reliable. External hard disk drives used to be very expensive but as with everything, prices have come way down. It is not unheard of to get a 1 terabyte external hard disk drive for well under $100 these days.

I have a 1 terabyte external hard disk drive connected to my desktop computer. I keep all my program files and operating system files on my main internal hard drive and I store all my documents, photographs and other media files on my external drive. If I need a file from my external drive, while working on either a laptop or netbook, I will simply plug my external drive into it and everything I need is there. I have never had to worry about where my files were stored and I have never had to worry about my files being damaged.

I find external hard drives are very portable and convenient. Since using my external hard drive, I have never lost any documents or media files. It is very easy to store large sized files on an external hard drive. If you are looking for something convenient and portable to store files on, I would suggest an external hard disk drive.
